Our commitment

Karen McPartlin and RE/MAX Realty 9 fully support and comply with the federal Fair Housing Act, the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination and all applicable fair housing laws and regulations. We are pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the nation.

Protected classes

It is illegal to discriminate in the sale, rental, financing or advertising of housing because of race, colour, religion, sex, disability, familial status or national origin under federal law. New Jersey law additionally protects creed, ancestry, nationality, marital status, civil union or domestic partnership status, affectional or sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, liability for military service, source of lawful income used for rental or mortgage payments, and other classes recognised under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination.

What this means in practice

  • We will not steer you toward or away from any neighbourhood based on the demographic composition of the people who live there — and we will not answer that question if you ask it, because doing so is unlawful steering.
  • We do not describe communities as “safe,” “good for families” or similar, because those phrases function as coded demographic signals. We describe housing stock, prices, taxes, amenities, commute and objective municipal facts instead.
  • Where you want data on schools, crime, demographics or similar subjects, we will point you to official public sources so you can evaluate them yourself against your own priorities.
  • Sellers may not instruct us to withhold a property from any buyer on a protected basis, and we will not accept such an instruction.
  • Age-restricted (55+) communities operate under a specific exemption in fair housing law. We will explain how a particular community’s age and occupancy rules are documented rather than paraphrasing them.
